Charl Schwartzel is storming up the leaderboard now. He’s six under through 13 and six under for the week. Tied for fourth right now. Kisner now jumps back into a tie for the lead. He’s nine under along with Woodland. Both through 13 holes.
Spieth had to hit his third shot on the par-5 8th from deep rough short and left of the green. He hits a decent one from there to the back collar but he’ll have a tough putt for birdie.
This leaderboard is…TASTY! Tiger Fowler JT Rory all getting ready to go soon. HERE WE GO. Just wanted to add some fun flavor to the blog. Here’s Andre Iguodala staying hydrated. Some real quality golf coming from the Rahm Spieth Rose group. Combined eight under par today. Those will be the guys to watch early Saturday.
Although guys aren’t exactly testing the major championship scoring record out here it’s an incredibly bunched leaderboard. Only two players of the 100-plus on course are worse than six over — in the current conditions Bellerive doesn’t have any crazy teeth. Hard to make birdies? Maybe. But no problem sticking around par for most of the field.
Back to our featured group. Jordan is in trouble on the par-5 17th after hitting it into the water but he almost holes his fourth shot to set up a potentially epic par from inside of five feet. Kisner and Woodland are three shots clear of the field.
Lots of waiting for the green to clear before JT swings away from over 300 yards out. He comes up short and left but draws a good lie at the edge of the fairway setting up a tricky chip.
Tiger Woods is only three weeks removed from a thrilling performance at the British Open. He will be joined by two other PGA Tour stars: Rory McIlroy and Justin Thomas. Thomas is the defending champion this week and will look to capture his second major title and second-straight win at Bellerive. McIlroy will look to get back in the major winner’s circle and put a third Wanamaker trophy on his shelf.
Woods swinging two-iron at No. 7 and that’s nice and smooth right down the middle. JT joins him in the fairway. Up ahead Rickie Fowler moves to five-under with another birdie! He’s got a two-shot lead.
Welp no birdie conversions for our trio so we move on to No. 14. Hey watch out — British Open champ Francesco Molinari is having a nice start today. He’s two under through four holes to get to -4 — only three shots back of the lead.
DJ misses a birdie chance that would have been fourth straight. Settles for par. Dustin Johnson has made three straight birdies and he’s now five under with four to play. T5
Not a terribly easy shot and he hits an okay one but it carries too much pace and he’ll be left with about 8 feet for birdie. Thomas is putting for birdie from the fringe and Rory has a little work left for birdie too.
Dustin Johnson is currently even through his first hole today so he remains at -3 — three shots back of leader Gary Woodland. Good morning! Jess Marksbury here. It’s a lovely sunny day in St. Louis and I’m looking forward to following the early action at Bellerive.
